This will be an image-heavy post, since the focus of this festival was the beautiful lanterns placed around the center of town, including the river. My friend Liz and I took a boat across the sea to the mainland and then a bus to Jinju for the weekend. The lanterns portrayed everything from traditional Korean activities and myths to pop culture figures.
My friend Liz and I made our own lanterns. You're meant to write a wish on each of the four sides.
This was my favorite lantern. It moved, breathed smoke, and blew fire!
These are the characters from Pororo, Korea's famous children's show
I made a flower!
We got these lanterns all the way home in one piece. The paper on the outside is very fragile, so this was quite a feat.
When we returned to the festival later that night, all the lanterns were lit up. They were so beautiful!
These rabbits are making ddok, a traditional Korean dessert. They are basically the Korean equivalent of the man in the moon. Instead of a man, Koreans believe the moon houses rabbits that make dessert!
We also returned to release our wishing lanterns onto the river to carry our wishes away.
This was followed by a beautiful, but very short fireworks show over the river.
We ended the night by taking a boat ride so that we could see the lanterns on the water up close.
Tomorrow I will continue with pictures from the Gyeongju conference and the big trip I just returned from last week. Hope you enjoyed the pictures!
